If you haven’t heard from us asking for your support, our regional teams likely don’t need any additional support, or we just don’t have any bigger events happening soon. Additionally, at times, we have more interest and offers of support than what we have the capacity to respond to.

Yes, you will. We work with Sterling Volunteers to conduct background checks on all volunteers at our youth events. Because HerUpland covers the costs of background checks, we send them out on an as needed basis for events, once youth events are scheduled and volunteers sign up. Each background check is good for 2 years.

The HerUpland Squad plays an important role in helping each event run smoothly and creating a welcoming experience for everyone attending. Squad membHers assist with event preparation, including coordinating and preparing meal options, and are typically the first to arrive to help with setup and the last to leave after everything is wrapped up.

In appreciation for their time and commitment, HerUpland covers Squad membHers’ lodging and meal expenses during the event. Squad membHers are also encouraged to enjoy the educational side of the event and may sit in on demonstrations, skills seminars, and other learning opportunities. At hunting events, they may also have opportunities to hunt when the schedule and their responsibilities allow.

Because the Squad’s primary role is to support the event and its participants, there are a few participation limitations. Squad membHers may not participate as a handler with their own dog during training camps, and they are not eligible to receive shooting instruction during hunting camps.

Serving on the Squad is a great way to become more involved with HerUpland, learn alongside other women, build relationships within the upland community, and experience our events from behind the scenes while helping create an incredible experience for our participants.

Field MentHers are experienced upland hunters with well-trained dogs and a strong understanding of safe, ethical hunting practices. They have experience working with novice hunters and youth, are patient and encouraging in the field, and always place safety first.

Field MentHers should demonstrate respect for the sport, the land, the dogs, the birds, and the people they are mentoring. They are expected to have the knowledge and experience needed to help participants build confidence, understand proper field etiquette, and develop practical hunting skills.

In addition to mentoring participants in the field, Field MentHers should be prepared to assist with or lead educational skills seminars on topics such as upland hunting gear, firearm care and cleaning, game bird cleaning and processing, and field-to-table preparation and cooking.

Dog TrainHers should have extensive experience training and handling a variety of pointing and/or flushing breeds. They should have successfully trained dogs to advanced levels, earned recognized titles within their respective testing or competitive venues, and demonstrate a strong understanding of breed-specific training methods and field performance.

TrainHers should also be well respected within the sporting dog community and come highly recommended by fellow trainers, handlers, or other experienced professionals in the field.

Yes, volunteers are welcome to bring their dogs to HerUpland events, provided the dog is well-mannered, under control, and comfortable being around multiple people and other dogs.

For the safety and enjoyment of everyone attending:

• Dogs must be kenneled while indoors unless otherwise approved.

• Dogs must remain leashed, on a tie-out, or otherwise under the handler’s control while in camp.

• Dogs should be able to calmly handle the activity and environment of a group event, including unfamiliar people, other dogs, and shared spaces.

• Volunteers will have opportunities to exercise and care for their dogs throughout the event.

• During hunt camps, volunteers may have opportunities to hunt with their dogs as the event schedule and volunteer responsibilities allow.

Volunteers are responsible for their dog’s behavior and should only bring dogs that can safely and comfortably participate in a busy group environment.
